December Family Fun!

Christmas will be here too soon for me.  It seems like I cannot get everything I want to do - done- with my family.  I am going to try and cut out a few things and start some new traditions this year.  Do you know what you are going to do this year?  Do you have traditions that you follow every year?

There are wonderful online sources for December holiday activities. Here are a few with ideas to help you get started. They’re great for homeschoolers, school teachers, and families looking to create some memories.

One we are doing in our family this year : 2010 Activity Advent Calendar (Printable) from Mom Cents Online Magazine  We are also going to discuss the religious aspect of the Advent over dinner using the resource from Amazing Moms!

25 Holiday Activities Until Christmas:
  1. Have holiday movie night with popcorn.
  2. Walk or drive around to look at Christmas lights.
  3. Buy new Christmas pajamas.
  4. Make edible ornaments for birds.
  5. Open a present on Christmas Eve.
  6. Read about holiday traditions around the world.
  7. Bake Christmas cookies.
  8.  Make scented ornaments.
  9. Go caroling.
  10.  Participate in a charity drive (food/toy drive).
  11. Write letters to Santa.
  12. : Make popcorn balls or Rice Krispies treats with little pieces of candy cane in them.
  13. Sit outside and drink hot cocoa.
  14. Take the kids shopping and let them pick out gifts for everyone in the family.
  15.  Have your kids donate gently used toys they no longer play with.

  24.  Make Christmas trees out of construction paper. Use glue, construction paper, glitter, paint, dried beans, or buttons (whatever you have on hand) to make ornaments and decorations for the tree.
  25. Get a plain stocking and decorate it with a symbol of something that happened this year.
I will be updating with new sites, recipes and ideas throughout December.  What is your favorite holiday activity?

She's BAAAACK!

Yep!  After 18 months of struggling with faith... I am back.  I no longer have that "Stinkin' Religious Thinkin'"!  I am glad God had me go through that, and I love everyone that I met at our previous church - Just glad I know what I believe now!  Yeah.  That quiet girl everyone loves has been hit with the boldness stick of faith and isnt afraid to be myself anymore!  If ya like me - great!  If ya don't- great!  The only person I live for is God.  His opinion of me is far more important than anyone else.   I am sure I will make mistakes, but I know I am forgiven.  Free to make the mistakes, because my heart is quick to repent.

A lot of my friends and Blog regulars know the struggles i was having.  Thanks y'all for praying and debating with me! :)  Glad we can all still be friends!

Wednesday Review- Time For Tots - Prek Kit

Photobucket
I have been preparing preschool lessons and teaching my two children at home each week.  It is hard to always be creative and to find time to sit down and plan, let alone finding time to teach them.  I am so very thankful to Nicole from Activity Mom, for sending me a kit from her new store for review! (sign up to receive my preK lessons for FREE)

The kit arrived and I was as excited as the kids!  It was nicely packaged and I was so grateful I had something to repack everything in!  Check out what all is inside this Purple package:

L-bug really enjoyed the Birthday game.  She loved matching the "baby"/ lowercase cupcakes to the "mommy"/uppercase letters.

M-Man spent a good hour writing his alphabet on the erasable Letter Tracing Cards!

There is so much to do, that I haven't even explored it all yet.  This is definitely going to help in preparing for my lessons.   It is well worth the $20 - in time saving alone!  This kit comes with great games and extra teaching ideas with the materials included.  This Preschool Kit is a must have - a great supplemental!  My 4th grader and 2nd grader enjoy the activities and playing "teacher" with the younger ones!  I am going to check out the other items in the store- there are 37 items to choose from! WOO HOO!
See what all this kit includes:
Activities:
Number Race
Letter Tracing Cards & Number Tracing Cards
Rhyming Picture Match
Birthday Party Alphabet Matching (uppercase/lowercase)
School Bus Addition
Spelling Mats - Shapes
Square Puzzles

Targeted Skills:

Critical Thinking

We rustled up some "c's" on our cowboy boot letter search & made our own Cowboy/girl puppets.  We talked about the shapes and glued them on our paper bag!

    The Signature of God

One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington , D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument .
With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this amazing historical information.

On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington , D.C. , are displayed two words: Laus Deo.

No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia , capital of the United States of America .

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say 'Praise be to God!'
Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States , it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo 'Praise be to God!'

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message.

    On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore ;
    On the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians;
On the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God!

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy 'One Nation, Under God.'

I am awed by Washington 's prayer for America . Have you ever read it? Well, now is your unique opportunity, so read on!

'Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.'

    Laus Deo!

When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation's capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look. You may forget the width and height of 'Laus Deo ', its location, or the architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: 'Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.' (Psalm 127: 1)

First day of school & a blown tire!

Yes, the first day got off rough!  Kids dressed and ready to go and I get a mile down the road and the tire blows out.  My husband saved the day and I got "Bear" off to her second grade class!  Hubby let me use his truck to take her and when I got home and walked in the house I had my two little ones saying - "Welcome to class teacher!"  The day just got better :)

This is my crew right before we headed off to school!  Hubby takes "Kaybug" and I take "Bear" and the PreK'ers.

So very excited!  They woke up at 6am ready to go!

On to Day one of My homeschooling the PreK'ers:

We started with singing the "ABC's" and did said our memory verse 3 times:
2 Corth. 5:17 “Anyone who believes in Christ is a New creation.”

    - Then we talked about the letter "a" and the sounds it makes.  They had fun yelling : "AHHHHHHHH" - Alligator, "AHHHHHH" Apple, etc
    - Colored their alligator picture and practiced writing the upper and lowercase "a".
    - Watched our "A" song
    - We Practiced counting and played "ALLIGATOR FLOOR COUNT"  - I have 3 pieces of laminated papers.  Each one has a 1,2, and 3 word and number.  They had to put the correct number of "alligators (clothespins)" on each paper.  We also jumped away from the alligators.  1 jump, 2 jumps, and 3 jumps.
    - Talked about the color "red" and did our "A" page for our alphabet book.

    A Good Woman...

Whereas a nice girl tends to live according to the will of others, a good woman has only one goal: to discern and live out the will of God.

A good woman knows that her ultimate calling in life is to be part of God’s plan for redeeming all things in this sin-touched world.

A good woman knows she cannot be all things to all people, and she may, in fact, displease those who think she should just be nice. She is not strident or petty or demanding, but she does live according to conviction. She knows that the Jesus she follows was a revolutionary who never tried to keep everyone happy.
    ...
That picture of a good woman made me want to be one. It made me want to grow up and trade the innocuous acceptability of niceness for the world-changing power and passion of true goodness.

the Jessie Spano - Carol Seaver Syndrome or "SSS"

I am admitting to having the "spano-seaver syndrome" or "SSS". I am an overachieving caffeine using woman. Instead of caffeine pills I have hit the hard stuff...Starbucks! The first step to recovery is admitting I have a problem. So that is what I am doing today.

SSS is a condition many face but are often too embarrassed to admit. Along with the constant caffeine drip the person is often setting high goals and making too many demands on themselves. This is usually self inflicted though demands of children and spouses can increase the symptoms.

Symptoms include, but are not limited to:
    - List making
    - Late nights combined with early mornings
    - Answering the phone and not saying "no" when asked to do something
    - A tugging sensation either emotional or physical when a child is persistently wanting cared for and/or attention
    - the need to go to the bathroom, in hopes of a moment of quiet
    - the uncontrollable urge to sing "I'm so excited"
    - deadlines
    - the need to keep the coffee supply fresh over taking the need to eat real food

If you find yourself with one or more of these symptoms, its time to take a break. Remember that you are only one person & life will go on if you take a little nap.
‎"Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of it's own." Matthew 6:34

    It happens in 31 days!!!

No matter how you want to look at it - it will happen in 31 days for me.  What is "it"? My kids start school! let the chorus of angels sing! (AHHHHH)!  This week has been one of those weeks - and its only Wednesday!
Yeah- imagine this along with mascara between the toes and my foundation poured all over my white comforter!  It doesnt even begin to compare to the "party in my bed"!  Add in three kids with chicken pox who fought constantly over who was "happier" and you pretty much have my Monday!

Tuesday - I really did mean to get up early to workout, but somehow my staying up until 1am so I could have "me" time, won over my desire to loose weight!  Thank goodness my husband got the hint when he called & I said we were having leftovers for dinner and he brought home pizza! (another strike in my weight loss goal!)

So - today is Wednesday.  I am thankful that school starts in 31 days.  Today anyway.  I will miss them - but today I am excited! I got up at 5 am and worked out!  Got my devotion time and even some facebook stalking (oh - come on - we all do it!  You look at your friends pictures and walls but dont comment)
I am now off to give my 3 year old a bath - so she can play.  Make a tent in the den for the kids.  Give myself an hour to power clean. Then I am taking the day off!!!
Think I will check out other blogs today and catch up with some blog friends!
Are you a 31 day (YAY) or 31 day (Boo) fan?

    Wednesday Review: Faith Like Potatoes

I recently viewed the movie,Faith Like Potatoes, and found it related to my own life more than I had expected.  The story is based on the real life of Angus Buchan, a Scottish born farmer in the Zulu African nation.  Both moving and entertaining this movie is a great for the family ages 12 and up.  There were some graphic moments that may disturb younger children.  In the beginning it is hard to understand the dialog due to the accents, but I quickly got absorbed in the story!  I put off watching this movie because, frankly, I thought it would be boring and just another "preachy" movie.  This was very well filmed and though the life of this man is inspiring, it is also very down to earth and made me have a better realization on what faith means.  Faith Like Potatoes is definitely along the quality of  The Blind Side and will go into my DVD collection!  This is more than a review - its a recommendation!  This should be watched with non-believers as well as believers.  Be prepared to answer some questions by those younger or not in the faith.  You can find a free study guide here : http://flash.sonypictures.com/downloads/homevideo/affirmfilms/FaithLikePotatoes_Guide.pdf

    Family Night Friday

Every Friday we celebrate family!  Tonight we are having a yummy spaghetti meal and just playing outside with the kids. THEN : its mommy & daddy time :) We are going to watch "Faith like potatoes" - look for review next week!
OH - I can't forget - I am serving home made Ice Cream Sandwiches for dessert tonight!  Print out your recipe card HERE

Start with your basic box cake mix:
Mix according to box.  I used devils food flavor.  Then use a shallow pan lined with parchment paper and grease.  I used my pizza pan and it worked really well.
Make sure to spread the batter evenly.

Bake according to the box, but check about 15 minutes early.  The time will depend on the depth of your pan.  Let the cake cool completely before mixing the filling.  Otherwise you will have a ice crystals in the ice cream mix.   Cut the cake with your favorite cookie cutter.  Large ones work best.  Slice the shapes in half and fill with ice cream mixture.  Wrap individually with plastic wrap and place in freezer bag.  Freeze until ready to serve!

    Ice Cream - Filling Mix:
    8 oz softened Cream Cheese
    1/4 cup Powder Sugar
1/2 small tub of cool whip
1/2 gallon softened Ice Cream - any flavor (I used vanilla)

Mix Cream cheese and powdered sugar until creamy.  Slowly mix in the cool whip than the ice cream.

    Runaway Bride Syndrome

In the movie Julia Roberts character takes on the traits and likes of her fiances and bails before ever getting married.  She gets a panic attack and eventually realizes that its because she doesn't know who she really is.  I got married young.  20 years old. I didn't feel young then and thought I had life pretty figured out.  Something happened along the way to where I feel like I have to rediscover everything about "ME".  I don't know if its because I had four kids when I was between the age of 23 and 29, or if its because we moved so many times, but I just don't know who I am anymore!  Sometimes I catch a glimpse of my younger self but she doesnt stay around long enough for me to truly recognize her.

When I was living at home I was a second mother to my siblings, a girlfriend to my now husband, a daughter that couldn't wait to spread her wings, a friend that had very little time for friendship.  I laughed more, could eat anything I wanted and still sport size 4 pants, and I could live off three hours of sleep!  Now, not much has changed except my diet and pants - and my siblings are too far away and too old for me to "mother". Who am I now that my baby is almost three?  What am I supposed to do with my life?  I feel like my life is starting over at age 32 and I don't know where to go!
I am giving it all over to God.  Its the only thing I know to do.

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

So, while I leave my future up to God, I am going to rediscover who I am. Like Julia Roberts character- I am searching for more about me.  Music, entertainment, food, etc  I am on a mission :)  Also like the character I do know what kind of eggs I like for breakfast: over easy :)

I know that the closer I get to God, the more of His gifts and qualities I will find.  This is exciting!  I have been so lost and felt so closed off that I haven't even been able to seek after God.  I feel I have been in the vice of doctrine for so long I haven't been able to break free to feel the love of God through His word.  I am not 100% now, but I am exercising my faith.  "Faking it until I make it." I'm putting my running shoes on and sprinting towards God.  Trusting Him to catch me and lead me.  I am after all His bride :)
